A Hallmark Mainstay

Spring has sprung, and so have this season’s trends. Rumor has it that pink, 2022’s “it” color, has fled, and it’s time for red. Step aside, Barbie, this year, we are going a few shades darker.

Color is like an unspoken language. Each hue and accent of a color tells a story and paints a picture for those who are in its presence. A picture that is painted with red dares to be bold. However, don’t be too quick to judge. The color has much to offer, more than what appears outside.

A color that is quick to be associated with bold gestures of love, or, from a more evolutionary view, a color that screams danger is on the horizon, has evolved to mean so much more in modern-day terms.

While red does mean danger in some instances and daring gestures of love in others, the color has a lot of other qualities. Red is a color that screams excitement. Red is a color that radiates energy, sending a surge of excitement pulsing through our veins. While pink is a color that alludes to lust, red is a color that flaunts attraction and exudes love.

However, our relationship with Red is nothing new. From an evolutionary perspective, red has always been associated with some of our strongest emotions. Are our primal instincts bringing us back to our long-standing situations with red? Perhaps the reasoning for our relationship with the color that has taken the runway by force hints at our underlying desires.

Similar to the warmth that we get from sitting by a fireplace on a cold winter's day, warmer colors like red, orange, and yellow elicit feelings of joy and happiness. Like the warmth of a security blanket, warmer hues bring us comfort, followed by a burst of energy.

The fashion industry has had its fair share to say about the resurgence of red. According to Harper’s Bazaar, “Red Is The New Pink.” The tabloid isn't the only one who thinks this is the case because more than twelve designers at NYFW cast their votes for red to be the “everywhere shade of 2023”.

Even if you didn’t catch the Super Bowl, it was hard to miss Rhianna’s halftime performance. In a sea of dancers dressed in white, the singer was the focal point, decorated in red head to toe, giving her nod to the surge of the color.

Determined to try that risky, red-lip look? No time like the present. Thinking about converting to a Ferrari fan because your wardrobe is in need of an excuse to buy a new red jacket? Do it. So, if you are confused about what all of this means, let me summarize. In short, it appears that in 2023, we are going beyond wearing our hearts on our sleeves.
