The Andy Warhol Diaries

From the words of Warhol himself, Netflix’s new limited series The Andy Warhol Diaries is a brilliant look into the life of one of the most inventive and revolutionary artists of recent generations. From 1976 to 1987, Warhol spoke to his friend Pat Hackett on a daily basis. Hackett transcribed these conversations into a 1,200 book, the contents of which form the basis for this series. The series depicts Warhol’s complex, private, and protected personal life and aspects of his career. With roughly six-hours of screen time, the show gives the viewer a robust glimpse into this individually creative force, but only enough to intrigue, never giving away too much about this notoriously mysterious artist.

How to Be an Artist by Jerry Saltz

To “be creative” cannot necessarily be taught nor replicated. Ultimately, the creative work comes from the artist themselves and wherever they seek and source inspiration from. Art critic Jerry Saltz understands this but uses that to advocate that everyone can be an artist. Less an instruction manual to art than a guide on mindset and approach, How to Be an Artist highlights Saltz sharp wit and canny insight. Separated into easy-to-follow sections, like “You are a Total Amateur” and “How to Actually Begin”, Saltz gives simple advice that both the complete amateur and virtuoso can learn and laugh from.

7 Days Out

This Netflix limited series follows major events in the seven days leading up to their launch. From Michelen star restaurant openings to international dog competitions, the series covers its bases, but the standout episode is its fifth one, featuring Chanel’s SS18 collection and its show at the Grand Palais in Paris. The episode includes footage of Karl Lagerfeld and his team crafting the designs, applying finishing touches, and crafting intricate sets at the Grand Palais. Though the episode is a close case study in event planning and the frenzy of planning a couture show, the delicate floral designs still glisten thru, providing a visually alluring effortlessness amidst the chaos.
