THINK PINK

By Morgan Shine

Spring has sprung, and so have this season’s trends. Rumor has it that pink, 2022’s “it” color, has fled, and it’s time for red. Step aside, Barbie, this year, we are going a few shades darker.

Okay, in hindsight, Barbie was not pleased with my satiric take in my last article, “Red: A Hallmark Mainstay,” a detailed backstory on the color and its reign on the runway for the 2023 season. So much so that moments after the article was posted, I stepped out my door and was overtaken by a sea of individuals decorated in pink, which seemed fitting. With that, pink quickly eclipsed red, reclaiming its reign.

Even if you did not go to see the Barbie movie, it is undeniable that a pink pandemic has run rampant among us. An ode to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Barbie pink has now flooded the streets (refinery29). Pink, specifically Barbie pink, has now become a trademarked color. According to an excerpt from Fashion Lawer Magazine, “Mattel has also actively enforced its rights in Barbie Pink to maintain its exclusivity. As long as Mattel continues using and remains vigilant in protecting its Barbie Pink trademark, it can continue to leverage the color as a significant differentiating factor for the iconic Barbie brand” (Fashion Lawyer Magazine).

So, what is Barbiecore? Much like the character herself, it is “dimensional and dynamic” (FORBES). However, this trend dives much deeper than simply throwing on a little pink here and a touch of pink there. The foundation of Barbiecore, according to Forbes Magazine, “includes the meshing together of soft and sweet pastels with touches of bright and bold neon tied together with eye-catching metallic accents” (FORBES).

Barbiecore is a trend that has infiltrated so many facets of our livelihood. Ruggable, known for its easy-to-peel and wash rugs, has launched a Barbie x Ruggable line for all your Barbiecore home needs (Ruggable).

Even condiments have taken the leap, diving head-first into Barbiecore. Heinz now stocks the shelves with their classic sauces “KENchup” and “BARBIEcue” in Barbie pink hues (Twisted). Other brands are right behind the condiments. Xbox, AirBnB, and Moon have all acquired a Barbiecore line.

If you are really set on living the dream life, Airbnb has collaborated with the Barbie movie to put the DreamHouse back on the market for rental in Malibu, California. This time, however, Barbie’s classic dream house has accents from Ken’s Mojo Dojo for our Ken lovers out there. (Airbnb)

Even though trend forecasters are still predicting a strong comeback for red, I can’t help but wonder, will red even stand a chance against the Barbeicore brigade?
